| Description: | In eucaryotic cells the nucleus is the most prominent organell. The nucleus is surrounded by a double membrane, the nuclear envelope, and contains the biggest part of the genetic information of the cell. These data determine appearance and function of an organism. Both 2D and 3D animations, as well as videos and microscopic (light-, laserscan-, EM and AFM) shots describe the structure of the cell nucleus in interphase, the composition of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), the condensation of DNA and the molecular structure and function of nuclear pore complexes. Interactive laboratory experiments lead to in-depth knowledge of preparation and evaluation of a karyogram. Computer animations explain genes and genetic code; they demonstrate what is going on during processes as transcription, translation and RNA splicing and inform about structure and function of ribosomes. Special topics such as replication of DNA (shown on prokaryotic DNA) and the characteristics of mitosis in animal and plant cells are given particular emphasis. |
